Angelina & Garrett’s Engagement Session at Casa Romantica in San Clemente

The late afternoon light was pouring through the arched doorways of Casa Romantica when I first walked in, casting long shadows across the terracotta tile floors and white stucco walls. I knew immediately — this was going to be one of those sessions where every corner is a shot. Angelina and Garrett had chosen Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens in San Clemente for the first half of their engagement session, and it was the kind of decision that makes a photographer’s job feel effortless.

Casa Romantica engagement photos have a quality you just can’t replicate anywhere else in Orange County. The property sits on a bluff overlooking the San Clemente Pier and the Pacific Ocean, and it was originally built in 1927 as the home of Ole Hanson, the founder of San Clemente. That history shows up in every frame — the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, the hand-laid tile, the arched walkways. It’s not a venue trying to look historic. It actually is.

We spent our first hour at the property, then walked three minutes down to San Clemente Beach for sunset. Two completely different looks, one session, zero stress. That combination is what made this one of my favorite shoots of the year.

The Session Story

We started outside in the main garden area of Casa Romantica — a charming grassy courtyard framed by succulents, cacti, and the estate’s signature stucco walls. Angelina wore a white lace off-shoulder corset mini dress with a ruffled hem, and Garrett was in a white button-down with khakis. Against the warm tones of the property, they looked like they belonged there.

From the garden, we moved into the museum portion of the house. This is where I started losing track of time. Chandeliers, arched doorways, beautiful rotating art on the walls — every room had a different mood. We worked through the main salon, a couple of gallery spaces, and then made our way to the patio overlooking the ocean.

The patio was breathtaking. Even without the tree that’s still growing back from the 2023 landslide restoration, the view of the Pacific and the San Clemente coastline stretching out behind Angelina and Garrett was one of those backdrops that doesn’t need anything else. Casa Romantica lost about half an acre of its gardens in the landslides, but the property has been steadily recovering, and the interior rooms and remaining outdoor spaces are fully open and as beautiful as ever.

After the patio, we ducked into what they call the bridal suite — a room with this lovely, timeworn historic feel that gave us a completely different look from the bright exterior shots. Then we explored the remaining gallery rooms and corners until our hour was up. I kept saying “one more photo, one more photo” because there was genuinely something worth shooting around every turn. The property isn’t huge, but it’s perfectly sized — enough variety to fill a full session without ever feeling like you’re scrambling for new spots.

By then, Angelina and Garrett ducked into the on-site bathroom to change. She switched into a tube top and flowy skirt — more relaxed, more beachy. We left our cars in the Casa Romantica parking lot and walked down to San Clemente Beach near the pier. It took maybe three minutes. When you walk out of the property, you make a right, then another right, and you’re at the beach. No driving, no parking stress, no logistics.

We spent about 25 to 30 minutes on the sand as the sun went down. The light was soft and golden, the water was calm, and Angelina and Garrett were completely in their element. It was the perfect way to close out the session — two locations, two outfits, two totally different vibes, all within walking distance.

Location Guide: Why Casa Romantica Is Perfect for Engagement Photos

There are a lot of pretty places to take engagement photos in Orange County. What makes Casa Romantica different is the combination of history, architecture, ocean views, and variety — all in one compact property. You’re not choosing between “pretty building” or “ocean backdrop.” You get both.

What makes this spot great for photos: The mix of indoor and outdoor spaces gives you a huge range of looks in a short time. Warm stucco walls, arched doorways, tile floors, lush gardens, and ocean views — all without moving your car. The architecture does the heavy lifting for composition, which means more time actually enjoying your session and less time walking between locations.

Best time of day to shoot: Late afternoon into golden hour. I was initially nervous about our midday-adjacent start time (we began at 5:15 PM in March), but the light played beautifully with the interior spaces. The soft directional light coming through the windows created gorgeous shadows, and the blue sky outside made the outdoor shots pop. If you’re shooting in spring or fall, I’d recommend starting around 4:30–5:00 PM so you can catch the interior in warm ambient light and then walk to the beach for sunset.

Best season: Spring (March through May) is ideal. The weather in San Clemente is mild, the gardens are green, and the late-afternoon light lasts long enough to give you time at both locations. Summer works too, but you’ll want to start later to avoid harsh overhead sun. Winter is fine — it just gets dark earlier, so you’ll need a tighter schedule.

Parking and access: There’s a free parking lot right at the property that comes with your permit. This is a huge perk — you can leave your car there and walk down to the beach afterward. No meters, no parking tags, no stress.

Permit requirements: You need a photography permit to shoot professionally at Casa Romantica. Off-hours sessions (when the venue is closed to the public) are $200 per hour. Regular-hours sessions during public operating times are less — check the Casa Romantica photography page for current rates. If you need to make any changes to your permit (like adjusting your time slot), you’ll need to do that at least 48 hours in advance so they can arrange for staff to be on-site.

One thing I really appreciated: when we arrived, the staff gave us a quick five-minute tour of the property, walking us through all the rooms and spaces available to shoot in. That tour saved us so much time. Without it, I would have been discovering rooms halfway through the session and running out of time before realizing what we’d missed.

Tips From a Photographer’s Perspective

Plan for two outfits. The venue-to-beach transition is so seamless that it practically begs for an outfit change. Something polished and elegant for Casa Romantica, something lighter and more relaxed for the sand. Angelina nailed this — structured lace dress for the estate, flowy casual for the beach. The bathroom on-site makes changing easy.

Don’t skip the interior rooms. It’s tempting to stay outside where the views are, but the indoor spaces at Casa Romantica are where you’ll get your most unique shots. The chandeliers, the art, the light filtering through old windows — those aren’t photos you can get at any beach in Southern California. The variety of indoors and outdoors is what makes this location special.

Book off-hours if you can. We shot on a Sunday evening when the venue was closed, and having the entire property to ourselves made a massive difference. No other visitors walking through shots, no waiting for spaces to clear. The $200/hour permit fee is worth it for the privacy alone.

Budget your time carefully. One hour goes fast at Casa Romantica. I ran over by about 30 minutes because there was always one more corner, one more room, one more shot I wanted to grab. If your permit is for one hour, know that going in and be strategic about which spaces matter most to you. Or book 90 minutes if your budget allows.

Midday light works here. I know that sounds counterintuitive — most photographers (myself included) gravitate toward golden hour. But the interior spaces at Casa Romantica actually benefit from midday sun. The light streaming through the windows created some of my favorite shots from this session — soft beams, defined shadows, and a warmth that felt cinematic. Don’t be afraid of a late-afternoon or even midday start time here.

Photo Spots at Casa Romantica + San Clemente Beach

The Main Garden Courtyard This is where you’ll likely start. A small grassy area surrounded by mature succulents, cacti, and the estate’s stucco exterior walls. The warm tones of the building pair beautifully with neutral or white outfits. Great for wide shots and establishing the venue’s character right away.

The Arched Walkways and Entryways Casa Romantica’s arches are some of the most photogenic architectural elements in any Orange County venue. The curved stucco frames create natural leading lines, and the interplay of light and shadow under the arches — especially in late afternoon — gives you that editorial, timeless feel without any posing tricks.

The Museum Rooms and Main Salon Chandeliers, rotating art exhibitions, archways between rooms, and beautiful natural light from the windows. Every room has a slightly different mood. The main salon feels grand and elegant; the smaller gallery rooms feel more intimate. Plan to spend real time in here.

The Ocean-View Patio The terrace overlooking the Pacific is the signature shot at Casa Romantica. Even with the ongoing garden restoration from the 2023 landslides, the view is stunning — the coastline, the pier in the distance, and open sky. This is where you’ll want your wide romantic portraits.

The Bridal Suite A quieter, more intimate room with a warm, vintage feel. The light is softer in here, which makes it perfect for close-up portraits and more tender, quiet moments. It’s a nice contrast to the bright exteriors.

San Clemente Beach (Near the Pier) A three-minute walk from Casa Romantica’s parking lot. Wide open sand, gentle waves, and a sunset backdrop that speaks for itself. This is where you let loose — barefoot, playful, golden hour magic. The combination of this beach with the estate above it is what makes this session format so special.

Who This Session Format Is Best For

This Casa Romantica-to-beach format is ideal for couples who want variety without complexity. If you love the idea of a historic, architectural backdrop but also want barefoot sunset photos on the sand, you can have both — in the same session, with one parking spot, in under two hours.

It works especially well for couples who appreciate history and character in their photos. Casa Romantica isn’t a blank-canvas studio. It has personality, texture, and nearly a century of stories in its walls. Your photos will feel like they belong somewhere specific, not just “a pretty location in SoCal.”

It’s probably not the right fit if you want a purely wild, adventurous session — think desert landscapes or mountain trails. And if you’re looking for a completely private beach with no one else around, the San Clemente beach near the pier can have other beachgoers at sunset. But honestly, that didn’t bother us at all.

If this sounds like what you’re looking for, Casa Romantica is absolutely worth the permit fee — and if you want a photographer who’s shot here and knows the property inside and out, let’s chat.

Honest Pros and Cons

What works well

The variety is unmatched for a one-location engagement session. Between the gardens, interior rooms, patio, and the beach walkover, Angelina and Garrett’s gallery looks like we shot at three or four different locations. That kind of range is rare without driving between spots.

The staff is genuinely helpful. The quick property tour at the start of our session was a small thing that made a huge difference. They also clearly care about the property and its history, which adds to the experience.

Free parking with your permit, and the ability to leave your car and walk to the beach, eliminates one of the biggest logistical headaches of multi-location sessions.

The architecture does the work. You don’t need elaborate props or complicated setups. The arches, the tile, the stucco walls, the ocean backdrop — it all photographs beautifully with natural light and minimal intervention.

What to plan around

One hour goes fast. There are so many shootable spaces that you’ll feel the time pressure. If budget allows, I’d recommend booking 90 minutes instead of 60.

The permit fee is a real cost. At $200/hour for off-hours, it’s an investment on top of your photography package. That said, the quality and variety of the location make it worth it. Just factor it into your session budget upfront.

No flash or external lighting equipment is allowed without prior approval. This wasn’t an issue for us shooting in natural light, but if your photographer’s style relies on off-camera flash, you’ll need to coordinate with Casa Romantica’s events team in advance.

The outdoor patio is still in partial restoration. The 2023 landslides took out a significant portion of the gardens and the iconic Ocean Terrace. The property is recovering beautifully, but if you’ve seen older photos of the full terrace with the original landscaping, the current view is different. It’s still gorgeous — just know what to expect.
